The Doors – 6 Albums Collection (Remastered, Warner Music Japan, 1967-1971) FLAC

The Doors, one of the most influential and controversial rock bands of the 1960s, were formed in Los Angeles in 1965 by UCLA film students Ray Manzarek, keyboards, and Jim Morrison, vocals; with drummer John Densmore and guitarist Robby Krieger. The group never added a bass player, and their sound was dominated by Manzarek’s electric organ work and Morrison’s deep, sonorous voice, with which he sang and intoned his highly poetic lyrics. The group signed to Elektra Records in 1966 and released its first album, The Doors, featuring the hit “Light My Fire,” in 1967.
Like “Light My Fire,” the debut album was a massive hit, and endures as one of the most exciting, groundbreaking recordings of the psychedelic era. Blending blues, classical, Eastern music, and pop into sinister but beguiling melodies, the band sounded like no other. With his rich, chilling vocals and somber poetic visions, Morrison explored the depths of the darkest and most thrilling aspects of the psychedelic experience. Their first effort was so stellar, in fact, that The Doors were hard-pressed to match it, and although their next few albums contained a wealth of first-rate material, the group also began running up against the limitations of their recklessly disturbing visions. By their third album, they had exhausted their initial reservoir of compositions, and some of the tracks they hurriedly devised to meet public demand were clearly inferior to, and imitative of, their best early work.

The Soft Parade On The Soft Parade, the group experimented with brass sections, with mixed results. Accused (without much merit) by much of the rock underground as pop sellouts, the group charged back hard with the final two albums they recorded with Morrison, on which they drew upon stone-cold blues for much of their inspiration, especially on 1971′s L.A. Woman.
From the start, The Doors’ focus was the charismatic Morrison, who proved increasingly unstable over the group’s brief career. In 1969, Morrison was arrested for indecent exposure during a concert in Miami, an incident that nearly derailed the band. Nevertheless, The Doors managed to turn out a series of successful albums and singles through 1971, when, upon the completion of L.A. Woman, Morrison decamped for Paris. He died there, apparently of a drug overdose. The three surviving Doors tried to carry on without him, but ultimately disbanded. Yet The Doors’ music and Morrison’s legend continued to fascinate succeeding generations of rock fans: in the mid-’80s, Morrison was as big a star as he’d been in the mid-’60s, and Elektra has sold numerous quantities of The Doors’ original albums plus reissues and releases of live material over the years, while publishers have flooded bookstores with Doors and Morrison biographies. In 1991, director Oliver Stone made The Doors, a feature film about the group starring Val Kilmer as Morrison.

The remaining three members of The Doors — Manzarek, Densmore, and Krieger — were involved in various musical activities in the decades following Morrison’s death but never saw successes approaching the levels of the original Doors. After the turn of the millennium, Manzarek and Krieger performed live under the name Doors of the 21st Century with singer Ian Astbury of the Cult handling vocals; a legal battle ensued when Densmore filed suit against his former bandmates over use of the Doors name. Ray Manzarek died in May 2013 in Rosenheim, Germany after battling bile duct cancer; he was 74 years old.

Over the next decade, the band would become one of the most influential, innovative and successful groups in modern music, selling more than 300 million albums worldwide. Their songs are some of the most celebrated in rock ‘n’ roll history that, to this day, resonate with fans young and old around the globe. Still, no matter how many times you may have listened to their music, you’ve never heard Led Zeppelin like this before.
With the June 3 release of deluxe editions of Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin II, and Led Zeppelin III, the band will launch an extensive reissue program of all nine of its studio albums in chronological order, each remastered by guitarist and producer Jimmy Page. Led Zeppelin will also open its vaults to share dozens of unheard studio and live recordings, with each album featuring a second disc of companion audio comprised entirely of unreleased music related to that album.
“The material on the companion discs presents a portal to the time of the recording of Led Zeppelin,” says Page. “It is a selection of work in progress with rough mixes, backing tracks, alternate versions, and new material recorded at the time”

With their 1978 eponymous debut, Van Halen simultaneously rewrote the rules of rock guitar and hard rock in general. Guitarist Eddie Van Halen redefined what the electric guitar could do, developing a blindingly fast technique with a variety of self-taught two-handed tapping, hammer-ons, pull-offs, and effects that mimicked the sounds of machines and animals. It was wildly inventive and over the top, equaled only by vocalist David Lee Roth, who brought the role of a metal singer to near-performance art standards. Roth wasn’t blessed with great technique, unlike Eddie, but he had a flair for showmanship derived as much from lounge performers as Robert Plant. Together, they made Van Halen into the most popular American rock & roll band of the late ’70s and early ’80s, and in the process set the template for hard rock and heavy metal for the ’80s.

All six original albums that Van Halen recorded with David Lee Roth are all remastered and included in this set: Van Halen, Van Halen II, Women & Children First, Fair Warning, Diver Down and 1984.

Metallica was easily the best, most influential heavy metal band of the ’80s. Responsible for bringing the genre back to Earth, the bandmates looked and talked like they were from the street, shunning the usual rockstar games of metal musicians during the early ’80s. Metallica also expanded the limits of thrash, using speed and volume not for their own sake, but to enhance their intricately structured compositions. The release of 1983′s Kill ‘Em All marked the beginning of the legitimization of heavy metal’s underground, bringing new complexity and depth to thrash metal. With each album, the band’s playing and writing improved; James Hetfield developed a signature rhythm playing that matched his growl, while lead guitarist Kirk Hammett became one of the most copied guitarists in metal. To complete the package, Lars Ulrich’s thunderous (yet complex) drumming clicked in perfectly with Cliff Burton’s innovative bass playing.

After releasing their masterpiece Master of Puppets in 1986, tragedy struck the band when their tour bus crashed while traveling in Sweden. Burton died in the accident. When the band decided to continue, Jason Newsted was chosen to replace Burton; two years later, the band released the conceptually ambitious …And Justice for All, which hit the Top Ten without any radio play and very little support from MTV. But Metallica completely crossed over into the mainstream with 1991′s Metallica, a self-titled effort that found the band trading in their long compositions for more concise song structures. Peppered with hits like “Wherever I May Roam” and “Enter Sandman”, it resulted in a number one album that sold over seven million copies in the U.S. alone. To support the record, Metallica launched a long tour that kept the musicians on the road for nearly two years.

By the ’90s, Metallica had changed the rules for all heavy metal bands; they were the leaders of the genre, respected not only by headbangers, but by mainstream record buyers and critics. No other heavy metal band has ever been able to pull off such a feat. However, the group lost a portion of their core audience with their long-awaited follow-up to Metallica, 1996′s Load. The album moved the band toward alternative rock in terms of image — they cut their hair and had their picture taken by Anton Corbijn. Although the album was a hit upon its summer release, entering the charts at number one and selling three million copies within two months, certain members of their fanbase complained about the shift in image, as well as the group’s decision to headline the sixth Lollapalooza. Re-Load, which combined new material with songs left off of the original Load record, appeared in 1997; despite poor reviews, it sold at a typically brisk pace and spun off several successful singles, including “Fuel” and “The Memory Remains.” Garage Inc., a double-disc collection of B-sides, rarities, and newly recorded covers, followed in 1998. The band’s take on Bob Seger’s “Turn the Page” helped maintain their presence in the charts, and Metallica continued their flood of product with 1999′s S&M, which documented a live concert with the San Francisco Symphony. It debuted at number two, reconfirming the group’s immense popularity.

Metallica spent most of 2000 embroiled in controversy by spearheading a legal assault against Napster, a file-sharing service that allowed users to download music files from each other’s computers. Aggressively targeting copyright infringement of their own material, the band notoriously had over 300,000 users kicked off the service, creating a widespread debate over the availability of digital music that raged for most of the year. In January 2001, bassist Jason Newsted announced his amicable departure from the band. Shortly after the band appeared at the ESPN awards in April of the same year, Hetfield, Hammett, and Ulrich entered the recording studio to begin work on their next album, with producer Bob Rock lined up to handle bass duties for the sessions (meanwhile, rumors swirled of former Ozzy Osbourne/Alice in Chains bassist Mike Inez being considered for the vacated position). In July, Metallica surprisingly dropped their lawsuit against Napster, perhaps sensing that their controversial stance did more bad than good to their “band of the people” image. That same summer, the band’s recording sessions (and all other band-related matters) were put on hold as Hetfield entered an undisclosed rehab facility for alcoholism and other addictions. He completed treatment and rejoined the band as they headed back into the studio in 2002 to record St. Anger, which was later released in mid-2003.

The recording of St. Anger was capped with the search for a permanent replacement for Newstead. After a long audition process, former Ozzy Osbourne/Suicidal Tendencies bass player Robert Trujillo was selected and joined Metallica for their 2003/2004 world tour. The growing pains that the band experienced during the recording of St. Anger were captured in the celebrated documentary Some Kind of Monster, which saw theatrical release in 2004. Four years later, the band returned with Death Magnetic, an energized album that returned the band to its early-’80s roots. Former Slayer producer Rick Rubin helmed the album, having replaced the band’s longtime producer Bob Rock, while Kirk Hammett (who was forbidden to play guitar solos on St. Anger) peppered the record with metallic riffs and frenetic solos.

Death Magnetic spent three weeks at number one on the Billboard charts and the group supported it with an extensive international tour that included a festival gig with Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax. Metallica closed out their Warner contract with Death Magnetic–outtakes from the sessions appeared as the Beyond Magnetic EP in late 2011.

25th Anniversary Edition 2-CD set – Originally released in April 1983, R.E.M’s debut album drew critical acclaim upon its release for its sound, defined by singer Michael Stipe’s cryptic lyrics and guitarist Peter Buck’s jangly guitar style. This anniversary edition comprises the 11-track digitally remastered CD album featuring the single ‘Radio Free Europe’, and now comes expanded with Bonus 15-track CD including a previously unreleased live performance recorded at Larry’s Hideaway in Toronto, Canada on July 9, 1983.

2. Reckoning: 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition (2009) (Originally released in 1984) [Remastered w/ Bonus Disc: Live at the Aragon Ballroom, Chicago]

Digitally remastered and expanded deluxe two CD edition of the Alt-Rock band’s sophomore album featuring a bonus disc that contains a previously unreleased concert recorded during the band’s Little America tour at Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom on July 7, 1984, and broadcast on WXRT-FM. On the live disc, the group not only performs eight of Reckoning’s 10 songs but also new songs that had yet to make it onto tape: ‘Driver 8′ would later debut on R.E.M.’s third album and ‘Hyena’ on its fourth. The inclusion of the live concert is particularly appropriate for Reckoning. Whereas Murmur had been complex and painstakingly deliberate, the band’s Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Michael Stipe, along with producers Mitch Easter and Don Dixon, saw Reckoning as a ”chance to turn up the volume, tear up the rule book, and capture instead R.E.M.’s on-stage mojo,” according to the liner notes by author Tony Fletcher.

3. Fables of the Reconstruction: 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition (2010) (Originally released in 1985) [Remastered w/ Bonus Disc: The Athens Demos]

Originally released in 1985, R.E.M.’s 3rd album, Fables of The Reconstruction peaked at #28 on the Billboard charts and spawned two hit singles, Can t Get There From here and Driver 8. Breaking with their tradition of recording in Athens GA, the band recorded in England with producer Joe Boyd. This 25th Anniversary Edition features the classic album digitally remastered. The bonus disc is a complete run thorugh of the album done in studio in Athens, before the band left for London for the actual recording sessions. These demos have never before been released and feature three additional tracks, not on the final album, including “Throw Those Trolls Away, ” a song the band has never released.The albums are packaged in a lift top box and include a poster and 4 postcards, as well as the CD booklet.

4. Lifes Rich Pageant: 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition (2011) (Originally released in 1986) [Remastered w/ Bonus Disc: The Athens Demos]

R.E.M.’s fourth studio album, Lifes Rich Pageant was recorded by vocalist Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and drummer Bill Berry at John Mellencamp’s Belmont Mall Studios in Indiana. Produced by Don Gehman, renowned for producing a string of punchy, soulful heartland-rock albums by Mellencamp, Pageant includes the singles Fall On Me and Superman. The album was R.E.M.’s first to achieve Gold certification status, and it reached #21 on Billboard s Top 200 Albums chart, the band s then-highest chart position. The 2CD lift top box contains the original album digitally remastered. Disc 2 contains “The Athens Demos,” 19 previously unreleased tracks recorded by the band before the final studio sessions. Also included is a new poster and postcards.

5. Document: 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition (2012) (Originally released in 1987) [Remastered w/ Bonus Disc: Live in Utrecht, Holland]
This new edition of Document features the digitally remastered original album, plus a previously unreleased 1987 concert from R.E.M. s Work tour. The commemorative release also adds new liner notes by journalist David Daley, with the 2CD package presented in a lift-top box with four postcards. R.E.M. s fifth studio album, Document was recorded by vocalist Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and drummer Bill Berry at Nashville s Sound Emporium. The first of several R.E.M. albums to be co-produced by the band and Scott Litt, Document was also the band s first to go Platinum and includes the singles Finest Worksong, Its The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine), and The One I Love, R.E.M. s first Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album peaked at Number 10 in the U.S., spending 33 weeks on Billboard s Top 200. In his 1987 review of the album, Rolling Stone s David Fricke described Document as the fifth in a series of singular state-of-our-union addresses by America s most successful fringe band. Indeed, Document launches with a call-to-action, as Stipe sings, The time to rise / Has been engaged in Finest Worksong, bearing witness to history-repeating-itself tactics employed by the country s elected leaders, evidenced by the Iran-contra hearings, Star Wars missile defense saber-rattling, and a hyper-moralized Congress bent on restricting and regulating controversial language in the arts. All you have to do is turn on the TV, said Peter Buck at the time, And you re inundated with complete lies from people who are supposed to be running the country.

Stephen Fain “Steve” Earle (/ˈɜrl/) (born January 17, 1955) is an American alternative country singer-songwriter, record producer, author. and actor. He grew up near San Antonio, Texas, and began learning the guitar at age 11. Earle began his career as a songwriter in Nashville and released his first EP in 1982. His breakthrough album was the 1986 album Guitar Town. Since then Earle has released 13 other studio albums and received three Grammy awards. His songs have been recorded by Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Travis Tritt, Vince Gill, Shawn Colvin and Emmylou Harris.He has appeared in film and television, and has written a novel, a play, and a book of short stories.

During the ’80s, Aimee Mann led the post-new wave pop group ‘Til Tuesday. After releasing three albums with the group, she broke up the band and embarked on a solo career. Her first solo album, Whatever, was a more introspective, folk-tinged effort than ‘Til Tuesday’s albums, and received uniformly positive reviews upon its release in the summer of 1993. However, the album was just a small hit, spending only seven weeks on the American charts, where it peaked at 127. Nevertheless, Whatever rejuvenated her career — after its release, critics were praising her songwriting, as were peers like Elvis Costello, Difford & Tilbrook, and Andy Partridge.
Melrose Place: The Music Early in 1995, Mann had a modest hit with “That’s Just What You Are,” a song included on the soundtrack to the television series Melrose Place. Following the success of the single, Mann was set to release her second solo album in the spring of 1995, but her record label, Imago, filed for bankruptcy before its release. She signed a contract with Reprise Records after Imago went under, but Imago prevented her from releasing any records. For most of 1995, Mann battled Imago in an attempt to free herself from the label, eventually winning her independence at the end of the year. After her dispute with Imago was settled, she signed with DGC Records. Mann’s second album, I’m with Stupid, was released in England in the late fall of 1995 and in January of 1996 in America. Again, it was greeted with positive reviews yet weak sales.
Magnolia [Original Soundtrack]Mann’s career got a kick-start in early 2000, however, when she released her soundtrack for the critically acclaimed film Magnolia; the song “Save Me” was later nominated for an Academy Award. Originally available only at live dates, the solo Bachelor No. 2 received national release in the spring. In the summer of 2002, Mann returned to the forefront with the self-released Lost in Space. Late 2004 saw the release of Live at St. Ann’s Warehouse, a CD/DVD package recorded during her summer tour. It was followed in 2006 by the critically acclaimed Forgotten Arm, a concept album built around the return from Vietnam of a drug-addicted boxer. Mann released a collection of Christmas songs called One More Drifter in the Snow in 2006. @#%&! Smilers followed in 2008.
CharmerMann spent the next few years working on adapting The Forgotten Arm into a musical, a project that was ultimately abandoned. She remained in the spotlight through semi-regular concerts and a memorable cameo on the IFC comedy series Portlandia before finally returning in the fall of 2012 with Charmer, her first album in four years. In 2013, Mann started performing with Ted Leo in a project that was eventually named Both; the duo released an album, also called Both, in 2014. Following that, Mann turned her attention to her ninth solo album, recording the deliberately slow and sad Mental Illness with producer Paul Bryan. Description:

While Canadian punk provocateurs Fucked Up play aggressive and incendiary music, that’s hardly where their desire to stir up trouble begins and ends. The group strays far from the standard template of four-four punk stomp, incorporating extended instrumental workouts, unusual arrangements, and lengthy experimental passages along with the furious guitars and ranting vocals. While Fucked Up have paid homage on record to pioneering anarchist movements and creative and political troublemakers of all stripes, they’ve also flirted with fascist images and obscure mysticism in a bid to puzzle and confront their audiences. And despite their fondness for lengthy musical statements, Fucked Up waited until four years into their recording career to record a full-length album.

Fucked Up formed in Toronto, Ontario, in 2001; the group members, who used pseudonyms as well as their real names, were Damian Abraham (aka Pink Eyes and Father Damien) on lead vocals, Mike Haliechuk (aka 10,000 Marbles) on lead guitar, Josh Zucker (aka Concentration Camp and Gulag) on rhythm guitar, Sandy Miranda (aka Mustard Gas) on bass, and Jonah Falco (aka Mr. Jo and Guinea Beat) on drums. In 2002, the band released its first record, a vinyl 7″ called No Parasan distributed by Deranged Records. Over the next four years, Fucked Up would release a steady stream of singles, EPs, and cassettes, most notably the infamous Looking for Gold vinyl 12″, which featured the epic-length title song (which incorporates massive guitar overdubs, extended drum solos, and a whistled coda); rather than deal with the expense of the EP’s elaborate package, the band opted to post the record online rather than go into a third pressing.

Fucked Up’s purposefully obscure and cryptic lyrical concerns led some music journalists to suggest the band was playing a bit too lightly with fascist ideology, an accusation the group seemed to cite when it featured a photo of a Hitler Youth rally on the sleeve of a split single with Haymaker. (The bandmembers also frequently cited their manager David Eliade as a key lyrical influence, but if he’s an actual Malcolm McLaren-style Svengali or a fictional creation in the manner of Randy Fitzsimmons is anyone’s guess.)

Hidden World In 2006, Fucked Up released their much-anticipated full-length album, Hidden World, through Jade Tree, a musically ambitious collection that featured 13 songs in 72 minutes, though its release didn’t stop their ongoing parade of singles and EPs, eight of which appeared the same year as the album. By 2008, the band had accumulated nearly 40 records to its name, mostly limited vinyl singles, and a third guitarist had been added to the lineup, going by the name of Young Governor, L’il Bitey, and/or Bad Kid; his real name is Ben Cook. In March, a chaotic performance on a pedestrian bridge at South by Southwest added to the hype for Year of the Pig, the second in their series of 12″ Zodiac EPs celebrating the Chinese New Year, which was released in mid-July that year.
The Chemistry of Common Life Just three months later, the band released its first full-length for Matador, The Chemistry of Common Life, which earned the band the Polaris Music Prize, an award given to the year’s outstanding Canadian album. The 2011 follow-up, David Comes to Life, was a highly conceptual beast of a double album, nearly 80 minutes in length, ushered in by several accompanying singles and a limited Record Store Day vinyl companion piece titled David’s Town. While not as conceptually daring, the band’s fourth album, 2014’s Glass Boys, found Fucked Up continuing to evolve their sprawling sound with an album of personal and self-reflective material. In 2015, Fucked Up released yet another EP, Year of the Hare, their seventh Zodiac series installment, and an eighth, Year of the Snake, appeared in 2017. – Artist Biography by Mark Deming

An award-winning, internationally successful duo comprising identical siblings Tegan and Sara Quin, Tegan and Sara first burst onto the Canadian music scene in 1998, when they earned the highest score in history at Calgary’s Garage Warz competition; their quick rise didn’t stop, for their melodic acoustics and charming stage personas led to a slew of dates with Sarah McLachlan’s Lilith Fair that same year and a record deal with Neil Young’s Vapor Records in April 2000.

This Business of Art Natives of Calgary, the twin sisters derived their music interests from their parents. Tegan and Sara began playing piano at age eight, and in their teens they were playing in their own punk bands. This Business of Art, which was produced by singer/songwriter Hawksley Workman, marked their debut in mid-2000, and a summer tour with Neil Young and the Pretenders followed in July. Two years later, Tegan and Sara released If It Was You, followed in 2004 by their commercial breakthrough, So Jealous. In 2005, the White Stripes released a popular cover of If It Was You’s “Walking with a Ghost.” That same year saw the duo touring the U.S. with the Killers and landing seven songs in the popular TV medical drama Grey’s Anatomy.
New Wave In 2007, Tegan sang backup on a song on new Sire labelmate Against Me!’s album New Wave, and the twins, who had by then moved far from the singer/songwriter mold and were more interested in exploring pop, punk, and indie rock, came out with The Con, produced by Christopher Walla of Death Cab for Cutie. Working with Walla went well, and Tegan and Sara also utilized his production skills on their next album, 2009’s Sainthood. The year 2009 also found the duo collaborating with Tisto on the song “Feel It in My Bones” for his Kaleidoscope album and with comedian Margaret Cho on the track “Intervention” from her Cho Dependent release. Arriving in 2011, the live CD/DVD Get Along was paired with three short behind-the-scenes films called States, India, and For the Most Part.
Heartthrob On their seventh studio album, Tegan and Sara turned to producer Greg Kurstin (Lily Allen, Kelly Clarkson, Ke$ha) for help in making an album that reflected the modern pop sound. The very slick yet still emotionally powerful Heartthrob was released in early 2013 to almost universal critical acclaim, topping the charts in over a dozen countries and earning three Juno Awards and a Polaris Music Prize nomination. They next appeared singing the theme song to 2014’s Lego Movie. Recorded with the Lonely Planet, “Everything Is Awesome” was certified gold and nominated for an Academy Award. Steve Hackett is best known as the guitarist with Genesis during their best years as both a progressive and commercial band, across ten albums of their history. His arrival in the group’s lineup at the start of 1971, replacing original guitarist Anthony Phillips, provided the group with the last ingredient that it needed for success. In the years since, while Phil Collins may have enjoyed pop/rock stardom and an acting career, and his other bandmates have had their periodic successes, Hackett has come the farthest as a star performer and composer in his own right.

The RoadHackett’s earliest experience in playing professionally came with groups named Canterbury Glass and Sarabande, making mainstream rock with a progressive/psychedelic edge. It was as a studio musician that he excelled, recording with a band called Quiet World in 1970. They were signed to the Pye Records label and released an LP titled The Road on that company’s progressive rock-oriented Dawn Records label. In late 1970, Hackett crossed paths with Genesis when he placed an advertisement in search of like-minded progressive musicians and Peter Gabriel responded — the group’s original guitarist, Anthony Phillips, had departed and they needed a replacement. He saw them in concert with a temporary substitute in the guitarist’s spot and approached them about joining. Hackett was in the lineup in January of 1971 and was quickly established as an integral part of their sound, though his concert work at their earliest gigs suffered from the fact that Hackett had little experience playing on-stage, which initially made him nervous. He subsequently became not only an essential part of the Genesis sound, but also of their image; his bespectacled figure, seated and bent over his instrument in studied concentration, helped to set the group apart from flashier progressive rock outfits of the era.
Foxtrot His skill and vast range opened up the group’s sound in new ways during their progressive rock phase; coupled with Phil Collins’ drumming in the mix, Genesis turned into a true virtuoso unit, as revealed on the albums Foxtrot, Genesis Live, Selling England by the Pound, and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, all among the finest progressive rock LPs ever conceived. Then, following the departure of lead singer Gabriel and his replacement by Collins, and their move toward a more commercial sound, Hackett proved equally adept; the difference was that their albums were now selling in the millions instead of the hundreds of thousands, and he was getting far more public exposure than ever before.
Voyage of the AcolyteHackett’s first solo album, Voyage of the Acolyte, dated from 1975 and was, in many ways, almost a lost Genesis album, featuring Collins and Michael Rutherford in its lineup of musicians. Coming out as it did in the wake of Gabriel’s departure from the group, it was a cause of some strain among the members, despite their participation, but Hackett stayed with the band through the tour behind the release of Wind & Wuthering, making his last appearance with the group on the Seconds Out live album, ironically just as the band was ascending into the top ranks of concert attractions and recording acts. Hackett’s first post-Genesis solo album was Please Don’t Touch!, which deliberately hewed very far away from his old group’s progressive sound and departed completely from Voyage of the Acolyte as well. He also put together his first touring band, which included Pete Hicks on vocals and John Shearer on drums, as well as brother John Hackett on flute and keyboards, with whom he subsequently recorded the Spectral Mornings album.
DefectorHackett’s sound advanced rapidly in the ’80s, through albums such as Defector — a fascinating musical/political fantasy — and the pop-oriented Cured. His concert work kept him busy throughout Europe, and the expanding fame of his old band led a steady stream of listeners to check out the work of the former Genesis guitarist, whose playing and personality were so prominent on those classic early albums. He also reunited with Peter Gabriel and Michael Rutherford, and then with all of his ex-bandmates for a pair of 1982 charity concerts. The following year he enjoyed a very successful European single in the guise of “Cell 151” from the Highly Strung LP, which helped propel that album to hit status. The mid-’80s saw him broaden his sound to include various elements of “world music” in his studio work, and he also to begin playing smaller, more intimate halls where his guitar skills could be better appreciated.
Time Lapse In 1986, Hackett hooked up with Yes guitarist Steve Howe to form GTR, a progressive rock unit that became a favorite of MTV and the rock press, generating a hit single (“When the Heart Rules the Mind”) in America and a platinum-selling album for Arista Records; GTR followed these up with an international tour. Hackett resumed his solo career in 1987, but with the momentum of GTR behind him, he now found crowds of tens of thousands eager to hear him play classical-style acoustic guitar and was becoming the arena rock version of Christopher Parkening or guitarist John Williams. His next major release was Time Lapse, a live retrospective of his work from several decades of music-making.
Blues with a Feeling In 1994, Hackett surprised most of his fans by turning back to his roots with Blues with a Feeling, an album built around the sounds of blues guitar and harmonica that harked back to his boyhood. This pointed to one of the ironies of Hackett’s career: as a member of Genesis, he was presumed by most fans to have been classically trained, but his music was actually derived from a multitude of influences, to which he’s always extended himself in order to embrace and absorb; thus, although originally a rock guitarist with blues roots, Hackett has performed with the London Symphony Orchestra and composed instrumental classical music based on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream for EMI’s Angel Records label.
Watcher of the Skies: Genesis Revisited Even as his composing career ballooned in the ’90s, he also began playing more concerts and turned back to his progressive rock roots by performing Genesis’ classic repertoire. Working with a group that included such luminaries as ex-King Crimson alumni Ian McDonald and John Wetton, not to mention Genesis’ Chester Thompson, as well as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Hackett released a live album titled Genesis Revisited, which was precisely that. During the ’90s, he fronted a group known as Steve Hackett & Friends, including former members of King Crimson, who had revived their classic progressive rock repertoire in dramatic new concert form, on CD and concert video.
To Watch the StormsHackett has continued to record well into the new century; numerous solo albums include To Watch the Storms, Metamorpheus, and Wild Orchids. Live Rails was released in 2011 and was followed by the moderately successful studio album Beyond the Shrouded Horizon later that year. In 2012, Hackett collaborated with Chris Squire from Yes under the moniker Squackett. Their album A Life Within a Day featured seasoned session drummer Jeremy Stacey, who was fresh from his work with Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. That same year, Hackett released Genesis Revisited II, another collection of reworked early Genesis material, which became his most successful solo album to date.
Wolflight He returned in 2015 with his 26th solo effort, Wolflight, and subsequently set out on the Acolyte to Wolflight with Genesis Revisited Tour to promote the record and to celebrate the 40th anniversary of his first solo album. A live recording of the tour’s stop in Liverpool was released in 2016. Hackett returned to the studio with wife Jo and co-producer Roger King to develop and record his follow-up to Wolflight. Taking on a more world music-influenced feel, the album, The Night Siren, saw Hackett adding a different dimension to his sound, featuring vocals from Kobi Farhi and Mira Awad as well as introducing a variety of musical instruments from around the world. – Artist Biography by Bruce Eder
